ABOUT MY INTERNSHIP

The Organization
Jubilee for Cambodia is a dorm ministry in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Two families work to run this ministry. Isaac and Karen Barringer and Eric and Liz Beck.
How did I get here?
I learned of the opportunity to intern for this organization in March of 2017. Eric Beck, one of the missionaries, came and spoke at a church event I was attending. Eric told me they were looking for a Media Intern to teach a Video Production class and to work on improvements to their social media accounts and website. I had all the paperwork done and was working on funding within the week. My internship was the Fall Semester of 2017. Although, Eric first told me about the internship, Isaac Barringer was my main supervisor throughout my internship.
Working Conditions and Typical Hours
Working conditions often were outside and hot. It was incredibly challenging at times to accomplish work due to events outside our control. A normal week in Cambodia typically had at least one power outage or at least one day of massive flooding, sometimes both. With this in mind, working hours became when ever was possible. Schedules moved around often due to rain, power outages, or students' schedules. The school term in Cambodia is different from the States which caused us to have to adjust our meeting time Mid-Semester. My media class typically met in the evenings and weekends, but moved to free hours during daylight in order to film. I would work on the website and social media pages during the day.
Appealing and Unappealing
I was excited to have the opportunity to teach video production in another country. If I had the resources I would have liked to teach on better equipment. The Project Nomad Kits that are provided through a company called Good News Productions International are a great resource for a Missions Group to be able to use with minimal costs. The Kits come with a lot of challenges. The editing software I taught was just an App on an iPad. It had very large restrictions on what it could and could not do. The app couldn't layer video which cause a lot of complications and confusion when teaching them how to add b-roll into their testimonies. I would consider that to be one of the most unappealing part of my internship. I was surprised to find I really enjoyed website building. I became familiar with Square Space and with Wix.
